Note-taking and reading comprehension among secondary students in online and traditional classrooms

Participants: 100 secondary school students (50 in online classrooms and 50 in traditional classrooms)

Methods: Students were randomly assigned to either a note-taking or no-note-taking group. Both groups were asked to read a text passage and then answer comprehension questions.

Results: The note-taking group had significantly higher reading comprehension scores than the no-note-taking group. The effect size was 58%.

The impact of note-taking on college students’ reading comprehension

Participants: 80 college students

Methods: Students were randomly assigned to a note-taking or no-note-taking group. Both groups were asked to read a text passage and then answer comprehension questions.

Results: The note-taking group had significantly higher reading comprehension scores than the no-note-taking group. The effect size was 78%.

The effects of note-taking on middle school students’ reading comprehension

Participants: 60 middle school students

Methods: Students were randomly assigned to a note-taking or no-note-taking group. Both groups were asked to read a text passage and then answer comprehension questions.

Results: The note-taking group had significantly higher reading comprehension scores than the no-note-taking group. The effect size was 27%.

The impact of note-taking on high school students’ reading comprehension

Participants: 75 high school students

Methods: Students were randomly assigned to a note-taking or no-note-taking group. Both groups were asked to read a text passage and then answer comprehension questions.

Results: The note-taking group had significantly higher reading comprehension scores than the no-note-taking group. The effect size was 53%.

The impact of note-taking on elementary school students’ reading comprehension

Participants: 50 elementary school students

Methods: Students were randomly assigned to a note-taking or no-note-taking group. Both groups were asked to read a text passage and then answer comprehension questions.

Results: The note-taking group had significantly higher reading comprehension scores than the no-note-taking group. The effect size was 29%.
